Solnhofen - specifications

SpecificationsSelection and Sampling Procedures.
As with any natural material, variations will occur in colour, markings and overall appearance. These are the characteristics of Solnhofen Stone and do not impair its strength and durability. We provide upon request, several tiles (mock-ups for larger projects) for the architect/owner’s approval of colour, texture and overall appearance. As no two pieces of stone are alike, it is possible to sample every inclusion and marking. We offer specific product literature, sample binders, boards and cards but strongly recommend that other reference material such as photographs or installations be viewed at the time of specification. Careful re-sampling prior to ordering is suggested to verify colour and overall appearance. A good industry practice is to order a minimum of 3-5% overage to allow for any objectionable marking or handling damage.

Care. Only non-acidic and alkaline-free products should be used, to avoid surface etching, bleaching or other possible damage. The EUROSEAL Stone Care System is recommended for the initial cleanup, protection and ongoing maintenance.
Solnhofen Stone
is a Grade A material according to the Marble Institute of America. It requires little maintenance due to its high density and abrasion resistance, particularly in the honed finish.

Solnhofen Natural
Stone in Litho-Quality
Solnhofen Beige, Grey, Nutbrown and Melange Solnhofen Greenstone
is unique for its “fossilized” (dendrites) surface and its early use, dating back to the Roman times. The variety in shades created by the dendrites guarantee that no two pieces are ever alike. The natural cleft finish makes the Solnhofen Natural Stone in Litho-Quality exceptionally well suited for areas where slipping and tripping is of major concern, i.e. bathrooms, pool areas and other outdoor surroundings. This 100% hand-quarried limestone is available in a random flagging shape (polygonal), cut to size and four finishes: quarry rough, slightly honed, honed and matte polished.
come in a variety of neutral colours and tones, each one consistent with one slight variation. Their blocks can be cut either horizontally with the bed (fleuri cut), or vertically against the bed (vein cut). The fleuri cut creates a flowery, non-directional and more harmonious appearance. The vein cut can be used to create a checker board pattern or provide a linear feeling to any installation. Combining the Beige, Grey, Nutbrown and Melange and using different sizes and finishes allow for almost endless design solutions. Features is noted for its uniqueness as a green limestone, excellent strength and weather/frost resistance. It is quarried in several shades of green, and can be either fleuri or vein cut, and textured. Unlike common green slate, Solnhofen Greenstone is quarried in large blocks, can be cut into slabs and molded into three dimensional forms such as cornices, balustrades or furniture. It perfectly complements traditional limestone colours of beige and grey. Solnhofen Greenstone is not highly polishable, however, it may be textured.

Solnhofen Jura Limestone “Bavarian Gold”
is the stone of choice for facades because of its open-pored structure. Technical and weathering characteristics (frost, air pollution, acid rain) are comparable to granite. Design flexibility with panel sizes up to 100x200 cm, or slightly larger. Recommended façade texture honed, sawn, sand-blasted, striated, rough.
